Did You Receive A Positive Pregnancy Test?
Confirming your pregnancy is the next step in the decision-making process. Even with a positive pregnancy test, the most accurate way to confirm pregnancy is with an ultrasound. SP Women’s Center provides free and confidential ultrasounds so that you can get essential information about your pregnancy.
According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, up to 1 in 5 women who know they are pregnant will miscarry (ACOG). You can still get a positive pregnancy test when you are miscarrying, so it is helpful to have an ultrasound to make sure. Getting all of the facts first will help you to make an informed decision.
How Does An Ultrasound Work?
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to show the contents of your uterus, determine fetal heartbeat, and show you how many weeks along you are in your pregnancy.
This procedure also exposes if you have an ectopic pregnancy, which could be life-threatening. It’s important to identify any complications like this right away.
Why You Need An Ultrasound
While a pregnancy test does have the ability to confirm if you are pregnant, an ultrasound is necessary to confirm viability. This is vital to your decision-making process, no matter what option you’re thinking of. If you are considering abortion, you’ll need to learn how far along you are to determine which type of procedure you can move forward with. Our medical team at SP Women’s Center provides free ultrasounds so that you can get the accurate information that you need.
The purpose of an ultrasound is to provide the following:
- Confirm pregnancy
- Detect fetal heartbeat (viability)
- Determine fetal age
- Estimated due date
What to Expect at an Appointment
When you arrive for your appointment, an advocate will meet with you to complete the paperwork (no insurance information or payment is necessary, all our services are free).
You will then be accompanied by the advocate to the ultrasound room. Here the licensed sonographer will use an ultrasound wand on the exterior of your lower abdomen. This is to obtain the images required by our medical director to confirm the results of the ultrasound.
If the pregnancy is confirmed, you will be offered pictures to take home.
You will again meet with the advocate to discuss your options and get answers to any questions you may have.
